Our Story
Founded in 2025, 50 Shades of Black Anime Incorporated is the product of a small community of passionate fans that has grown into one of the largest and most vibrant spaces celebrating the intersection of Black culture and Japanese pop culture. What started as a niche group has evolved into a thriving movement with over 195,000 members and counting. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to create a safe, inclusive, and uplifting space for Black anime fans while celebrating the richness of our culture, creativity, and excellence.
The group we started in 2017 went viral in February 2024, skyrocketing from just 6,000 members to over 195,000 members in a matter of months, thanks to the power of community, representation, and a shared love for anime. Today, we are more than just a Facebook group. We are a family of innovators, creators, and visionaries. Within our community are artists, content creators, doctors, lawyers, scientists, financial advisors, entrepreneurs, and geniuses all united by a passion for anime and the drive to see Black excellence shine.
The name “50 Shades of Black Anime” is more than a playful nod to a famous book title. It represents the limitless shades, subcultures, genres, talents, and potential that make up the Black anime nerd community. We are diverse, multi-talented, and unstoppable, and we’re dedicated to enriching our community, creating opportunities for our members, and empowering creators and business owners to thrive.
In 2027, we are proud to bring this vision to life with the launch of the 50 Shades of Black Anime Convention, a groundbreaking, three-day multicultural event celebrating the African-American experience through the lens of Japanese pop culture. We expect to welcome 10,000–20,000 passionate fans for a weekend filled with cosplay, panels, gaming, art, music, and unforgettable memories.
This is more than an event; it’s a celebration of who we are, where we’ve come from, and where we’re going. We are 50 Shades of Black Anime, and we’re just getting started.
